Street Portraits

I think images of people can tell stories about them and their situations in life. If the image is made in a certain way, we can learn a lot about their lives. I like nothing more than walking around the streets of a city or town asking interesting looking people in interesting (and sometimes tragic and heart-rending) circumstances if I can take their photograph. If that person is homeless or asking for money, I always give them some dollar bills, whether they agree to let me take their picture or not. I am particularly struck by those street people who have hand-written signs describing their plight, something I call “signs of despair”.

The COVID-19 pandemic has hit communities of color and other marginalized populations harder and more harshly than others. So many of these people were living paycheck-to-paycheck before the virus hit and the loss of jobs and - for undocumented people - the lack of availability of government and safety net resources has made their plight even more desperate. I am trying to document one effort, by the El Centro Hispano in Durham, Carrboro and Wake County, to help.

Giving Out Masks & Information to Durham's LatinX Community

This was an event to reach out to the LatinX community in Durham during the coronavirus pandemic, organized by El Centro Hispano on Sunday, June 28, 2020. They gave out masks and information. This community has been hit especially hard in Durham and North Carolina, with the big majority of patients being diagnosed.

Carbon Transfer Images

Carbon transfer printing was developed by Alphonse-Louis Poitevin in 1855 and refined by Joseph W. Swan in 1864. It employs a complex, multistep process of creating a latent image on a UV-light-sensitive primary support consisting of gelatin and a lamp black pigment (I use a combination of India Ink and Carbon Black, sometimes with a small amount of Mixol #11 violet added in) via contact printing. This image is then transferred to a final support (I use hand-sized Fabriano Artistico 300 gsm or Hahnemühle Platinum Rag 300 gsm watercolor papers). This is an archival “permanent” process that will not fade that gives very deep rich blacks and a long tonal range. There is also some 3-dimensionality to the print due to the transfer of UV-crosslinked gelatin proportional to density of the various regions of the negative. I think this technique of hand-printing gives great depth and feeling to portraits, as I hope will come through in these high-resolution scans.

THE SILK ROAD

A visual journey along the fabled Silk Road, beginning in Kazakhstan and ending in Turkmenistan. While attempting to document as much of the history as I could find, it was difficult to escape the fact that all of the countries we visited were former members of the Soviet Union and retain significant vestiges of that era, even though it ended in the early 1990s. Turkmenistan in particular, was what I would call “North Korea lite”, a police state where all the cars are white (by decree) and all the buildings in the center of Ashgabat (the capital) are faced with white marble and monumental.
